"I came up with cold wax, my most original product, thanks to my husband. In New York, I had been preparing for many years a hot wax that I sold to beauticians. The Beauty Salon and the Laboratory in New York closed at 5:30 p.m. and my husband came round to pick me up every afternoon. Nearly every time, especially when the windows were closed, the Beauty Salon gave off a very strong smell of hot wax and, quite often, of resin vapours. My husband detested that smoky smell and, since he had to wait for me, tried to find ways to get me to produce a type of wax he was familiar with.
As an archeologist, he had travelled widely in the Far East. He had noticed that women there produced a type of wax by making a ball of sugar, lemon and black coffee. It was their custom to sit in the courtyard of their home and chat, with this ball in their hands and, each time they spotted a hair, quickly press the wax onto it and pull it off...
